Artist connections

After I experimented with ink and straws, I noticed that the results I could see reminded me of the work of Jackson Pollock. I then decided to look into his work, to look at the similarities. Pollock was known for creating piece that look likes paint slodges, in a random formation. I felt that this effect look a bit like the ones created with the inks, and I have shown this link with the artist in my folder.

Bubbles

These are some of bubble experiments, i mixed ink into washing up liquid and using a straw blew bubbles onto the page, then i worked into them using marker pens and chalk pastels.

Experiment with butterflies

After looking into butterflies that were in a museum on our trip, my research has stemed from there. I created some butterflies out of black card, to hopefully use to make a slideshow. But instead of this I decided to make a flip book, it has the same ideas and works just as effectively. I wanted to try and make the butterlies appear to be moving across the page. The various stills helped to achieve this, I was quite happy with the overall outcome.

Experiments

These pictures are experiments I produced using bleach and tissue paper. You can see how different the effects are depending on the colour used.

Monday 6 December 2010

The image on the left was created by Patrick Gunderson and I wanted to try and recreate his painting by using a different style and media so I used batik and glitter glue.

This image on the left is also created by Patrick Gunderson and I have chosen to use his style and colours by experimenting with two different media's which are marbling inks and a bubble effect with paint.

Progress with visual studes folder

I have been adding samples of techniques I enjoy working with into my folder. One of my favourites is creating patterns and effects with coloured inks. By using straws I was able to move the inks around the paper which made the inks to spread out. I think it is effective and is easy to achieve, and I hope to use my samples to help me with more inspiration.

Spray Paint Techniques

Using techniques demonstrated by Gary Reef I created some interesting backgrounds using spray paint and turps on magazine pages.

I then decided to take a drawing from the museum and put this over my spray paint bakground using illustrator and photoshop.
I first scan in my background image and my drawing before using illustrator to trace the lines of my figure.
I then transferred this image onto photoshop and put it over my background.

Pattern repeat and experimentation with colour combinations.

This photograph was taken in the Manchester costume gallery, I chose a section and produced the following drawing from it, folding over the edges to line up the print.

I then took a photograph of the drawing and repeated it using Photoshop.

I looked then at colour combinations, first channelling the initial photographs colours and then experimenting using brighter colours that would make the image stand out as a repeat print.

Visual Studies Experimentation - 2nd December

Experimentation

Experimentation with black ink and salt. It looks crystalised almost quite snowflake like. The black background makes it quite intracate.
Another experimentation piece using water colour and salt.

Watercolour and salt effects.

These as simple experiments I began ot create using water colour and a bit of acylic to create finger prints, inspired by particular impressionists styles.

Abstract Designs.

Here are some quick designs i have created. The top two are simply bright dyes upon paper in a circular style. The bottom two are masking fluid and acrylic designs.

Alice Kettle influenced designs.

These are my designs which remind me of Alice Kettles work. I have focused on hands, however manipulated the hand and focused towards fingerprints. I have used t\various techniques from photocopying to machine stitching. The pieces i have created are largely abstract, as many could misinterpret the fingerprint patterns for scribbles.

Buttons.

Whilst in the costume gallery Manchester, i found a room dedicated to buttons. I really appreciated all the different types and styles of buttons there was available on display. They really caught my eye by their bright colours and quirky designs.

Alice Kettle Influence.

These pieces, created by textile artist Alice Kettle, were found at the costume gallery Manchester. She has focused this exhibition around the theme of hands/gloves. I appriciate her work greatly as the designs are machine and hand stitched and include intricate embellishment.
More of her work can be found at: http://www.alicekettle.com/

Sunday 28 November 2010

This is one of the repeat patterns which I have created in adobe photoshop. The photo on the right is the original image which I took in the Manchester museum as a you can see I have manipulated and rotated the image several times and have layered them together to create a new image and pattern.

Friday 26 November 2010

These are some work for my visual log book.
The one on the far left is a wax resist done on tissue with bleach.

For the other one I used bubble wrap with white ink to print the background and some paper cuttings to get the details down.
